Modern Warfare 4: Season 1 Arrives November 6 with Shoot House and a Bigger DMZ

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has barely been out for two weeks and it already has a date for its first big content push. As reported by Vandal, Activision and Infinity Ward have revealed everything coming in Season 1, which kicks off on November 6 with more than six multiplayer maps, new weapons, brand-new modes, a major expansion of DMZ and the game's integration with Warzone.

It matters for a simple reason: the first season of any Call of Duty is the one that sets the competitive tone for the year. It is when the weapon meta settles, when the launch maps start rotating and when teams decide what to practice and what to drop. For a community like ours, split between the Americas and Europe, it also shapes the calendar of scrims, internal tournaments and streams for the coming weeks.

What you need to know

  • Date: Season 1 starts on November 6, just two weeks after the game launched.
  • Launch 6v6 maps: Backstab, Canyon and the return of Shoot House, now set in North Korea.
  • Mid-season: Ministry and Overflow will arrive, along with other maps yet to be announced.
  • New modes: Grind, Drop Zone and Gauntlet 1v1 join multiplayer.
  • DMZ and Warzone: the extraction mode gets a major expansion and the game integrates with Warzone in this same update.

Maps and modes: the return of Shoot House

The main course for multiplayer is the three 6v6 maps available from day one. Backstab takes us to a war-torn, snow-covered city, Canyon goes for a desert setting among towering rock formations, and Shoot House brings back one of the franchise's most beloved maps with a new North Korean setting. Ministry and Overflow will be added mid-season, and Activision itself is leaving the door open for more maps yet to be revealed.

As for modes, the season adds Grind, Drop Zone and Gauntlet 1v1. The last one interests us most from a competitive standpoint: one-on-one duels are the perfect format for measuring raw mechanics, for challenges between team members and for short-form content that performs very well on social media. The source does not go into detail about the rules of each mode, so we will have to wait and try them.

DMZ grows and Warzone enters the picture

The other pillar of the update is DMZ. Vandal reports a major expansion of the extraction mode, with a large-scale zone, and the integration of Modern Warfare 4 with Warzone starting this very season. New weapons are also confirmed, although the report does not specify which ones or how many. That is something to keep an eye on: every new weapon in Call of Duty is a potential meta shake-up, even more so when the battle royale is involved.

Our take

The first thing that stands out is the pace. Launching Season 1 two weeks after release is a statement of intent: Activision wants the game to never stand still. For content creators it is a blessing, because it guarantees fresh material right when the launch hype starts to fade. For the competitive player, however, it is a double-edged sword. Two weeks is not even enough to master the base maps, and now there are three more to learn, with two more promised mid-season. Map rotation in tournaments is going to be a headache for any serious organizer.

The return of Shoot House is the smartest move and, at the same time, the safest one. It is a map everyone knows, one that produces fast matches and fills streams effortlessly. But it is also the umpteenth time Call of Duty has leaned on nostalgia instead of taking a risk with new designs. Backstab and Canyon will have to prove they are not filler next to a classic that already comes with a built-in fan base.

And then there is DMZ. The fact that the extraction mode is getting an expansion of this scale so soon tells us Activision sees it as a centerpiece, not an experiment. If the Warzone integration truly works, the shared progression ecosystem could be enormous. If not, we are in for another season launch with bugs bleeding across three different modes. We have little faith that everything will run clean on day one, and a lot of faith that the content, in the medium term, will be worth it.

What do you think?

Three new maps two weeks in, a classic back, 1v1 duels and a DMZ bigger than ever. Do you think Activision is moving too fast, or is this exactly the pace Modern Warfare 4 needs to stay alive? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord: which map are you going to grind first on November 6?
