Modern Warfare 4 finally respects your time: Double XP will only tick down while you play

One of the most common complaints from anyone who has ever leveled up weapons or ranks in Call of Duty is about to become a thing of the past. As reported by Vandal, Activision Blizzard has confirmed that in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, launching on October 23, Double XP tokens will no longer run on a real-world clock. From now on, they'll only count down while you're actually in a match.

It may sound like a minor tweak, but it completely changes how you plan a session. Until now, activating 2XP meant starting a race against the clock: every minute spent in menus, tweaking loadouts, waiting for your squadmate to log on or dealing with any unexpected hiccup was simply lost. For anyone who plays seriously, and even more so for streamers, all that downtime was wasted progress.

What you need to know

  • The change arrives with Modern Warfare 4, which is set to launch on October 23.
  • Double XP tokens will only be consumed during match time, not while you're outside of a match.
  • Tokens you've already saved up from other Call of Duty titles or Warzone can be used in the new game.
  • The announcement came from the official Call of Duty social media account, and the reaction on X has been overwhelmingly positive.
  • It's a long-standing community request, one that has also come up in other franchises such as Battlefield.

What exactly is changing

The old system was simple and pretty unfair: you activated a token and a countdown started that wouldn't stop for anything. It didn't matter whether you were in the middle of a match, on a loading screen or browsing the customization menu. With Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward is changing that timer so it only runs when you're actually playing.

The franchise's official account summed it up like this in its post:

“More time for your 2XP to count. Tokens will be consumed during gameplay.”

On top of that, there's one far from minor detail: tokens stockpiled from previous installments or Warzone will remain valid. If you're one of those players with dozens of hours of 2XP saved up, you won't lose them when you make the jump to the new game.

A long-standing complaint finally heard

The real-time consumption system had been criticized for years, and not just in Call of Duty. In Battlefield, the community has been complaining about the same thing for a long time. The general feeling was that the design pushed you to play in a rush and punished any break, which clashes head-on with the way people play in groups, with friends who show up late and sessions that get interrupted.

The fact that Infinity Ward has chosen to fix this right at launch, rather than mid-season, shows that the studio has taken note of the growing frustration.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, our view is clear: it's a good decision, and it's overdue. For years, players' time has been treated as a resource the game could burn through at will, and any competitive player knows how frustrating it is to watch half an hour of 2XP vanish while tweaking loadouts before a scrim or waiting for the team to fill out the squad. Having tokens respect actual playtime is the bare minimum anyone could ask for.

For content creators, the change matters even more. Streams are full of constant breaks: reading chat, acknowledging a donation, explaining a loadout or setting up a match with the community. Under the old system, every one of those breaks came at a cost in progress. Now it'll be possible to stream at a more relaxed pace without feeling like you're racing the clock.

That said, it's best not to celebrate too much. Tokens are still a tool designed to keep you hooked, and fixing a design that annoyed almost everyone doesn't automatically make the progression system generous. We'll have to see how the timer behaves in practice, but the gesture of listening to the community deserves recognition. Hopefully it won't be the last.
