Obsidian Now Reports to Bethesda: What's Left of Its Creative Identity?

It's been a turbulent week at Xbox. Following a new wave of layoffs and a studio restructuring, Obsidian Entertainment is now part of Bethesda's reporting structure. As reported by Gamereactor Spain, Bethesda president Jill Braff addressed the studio's staff with a message of reassurance: the change is, above all, an administrative adjustment and won't touch what makes Obsidian special.

Why does it matter? Because this is one of the studios with the most personality in the entire Xbox ecosystem, the team behind The Outer Worlds, Avowed and Grounded. When the people above you on the org chart change, especially in the middle of a round of cuts, it's only natural for the community to wonder whether that creative freedom will survive. And with Fallout in the mix, the conversation heats up even more.

What You Need to Know

  • Obsidian is joining Bethesda's hierarchy. Braff frames it as a primarily administrative move.
  • Leadership stays the same. Feargus Urquhart and the current leadership team will keep running the studio day to day, although they now report directly to Braff.
  • Fallout remains in the hands of Bethesda Game Studios. Control of the franchise is not moving to Obsidian.
  • Projects are continuing. Obsidian is still working on Grounded and a new Fallout title; for now, there are no plans for a sequel to The Outer Worlds 2.
  • A sensitive context. The announcement comes right after this week's Xbox layoffs and restructuring.

What Changes and Who It Affects

On paper, this is a change in reporting lines: Obsidian no longer answers through the same channel as before, but through Bethesda's presidency instead. Creative and operational leadership stays in-house, with the same faces in charge. For players, that should mean continuity: projects already in development carry on, and no cancellations have been announced alongside this move.

The interesting nuance lies with Fallout. Obsidian is working on a new entry in the series, but ownership and control of the franchise still belong to Bethesda Game Studios. In other words, Obsidian handles development, but the big-picture decisions about the universe are made by another team. Having both under the same umbrella could make coordination easier… or become a source of friction if their visions don't line up.

An Ecosystem Moving in Opposite Directions

Obsidian's situation contrasts with other recent moves within Xbox. Compulsion Games, for example, has completed its separation and is going back to operating independently. Two studios, two very different paths in the same reorganization:

Our Take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we only half believe the "it's just administrative" line. Keeping Urquhart and his team in charge is certainly the best possible sign, but experience tells us that at large corporations, whoever controls the org chart ends up shaping priorities, budgets and schedules. You don't need to change a studio's identity overnight; it's enough to keep deciding which projects get the green light and which ones end up on the shelf.

That said, there are reasons for optimism. Obsidian has a long history with Fallout that many fans still remember fondly thanks to New Vegas, and a new entry in the series in its hands is, quite simply, one of the best pieces of news this restructuring could have given us. If the integration helps both teams work together better, the result could be very powerful. The question is how much room Obsidian will have to leave its mark, with its sharper wit and heavier narrative focus, on a franchise controlled by another studio.

For content creators and the competitive community, the spotlight is on Grounded: it's the Obsidian project with the most longevity in co-op, community challenges and speedruns, and its future is what affects us most day to day. What does sting is the lack of sequel plans for The Outer Worlds 2. We understand that priorities change, but putting an in-house IP on hold while working on someone else's strikes us as a conservative bet that says a lot about where Xbox is right now.

What Do You Think?

The promise is on the table: same Obsidian, different boss. Now it's time to see whether actions match words over the coming months. In the meantime, we want to hear where you stand: do you think Obsidian will keep its essence under Bethesda's wing, or is this integration the first step toward losing it?
