PS Plus October lineup: speed, monsters and an extraction shooter for everyone

Sony has revealed the monthly games for PlayStation Plus in October 2026. The announcement came via the official PlayStation Blog and, as reported by IGN España, this month's lineup includes three titles. One is a racing game that's starting to show its age. Another is an extraction shooter overrun with monsters. Action and speed define the selection, arriving just as the final quarter of the year kicks off, the busiest release season of all.

Why does it matter? Because for millions of subscribers, the monthly games are still the gateway to genres they might never have bought otherwise. An extraction shooter included free with the subscription can fill its servers overnight. For competitive players and content creators, that means new audiences, new goals and, sometimes, a second life for games that flew under the radar at launch.

What you need to know

  • Sony officially announced the PS Plus monthly games for October 2026 on its blog.
  • There are three games, with action and speed as the common thread.
  • One of them is a racing game that, according to IGN España, feels slightly dated.
  • Another is an extraction shooter packed with monsters.
  • The IGN España article links to the page for Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2, suggesting it's part of the lineup.

What this lineup offers and who it's for

The selection covers three very different types of player. The racing game is the most traditional pick. IGN España calling it somewhat dated isn't necessarily bad news. Racing games age differently from other genres: if the handling and sense of speed are well executed, they still hold up years later, even if the graphics no longer dazzle. For speedrunners and time trial competitors, an older title even has an advantage: established leaderboards and a community that already knows every shortcut.

On paper, the extraction shooter is the main draw for competitive players. It's a genre that lives and dies by its player base: without people in matches, there's no tension, no loot trading and no stories to tell. That's why these games tend to benefit hugely from landing on PS Plus, which brings a sudden flood of new players. The monster-filled setting adds a PvE element that could make it more approachable for newcomers to the genre.

The third title, judging by the link in the news article itself, appears to be Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2, from a franchise known for its lighthearted action and chaotic co-op. It's not the kind of game that demands elite reflexes, but it's the kind that works wonderfully on stream with friends.

The release calendar context

October is usually a month when the big releases grab all the attention. A more modest monthly selection, without a major exclusive as the headliner, fits Sony's habit of saving the heavy hitters for other moments or for the higher-tier catalog. Even so, the fact that all three games share the same tone (straightforward action, quick sessions, no hundred-hour commitments) makes the lineup feel cohesive.

Our take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we see it as a solid lineup, nothing spectacular. The extraction shooter interests us the most: if the community shows up, it could be great ground for casual scrims, internal challenges and clip-worthy content. That said, it's best not to get too excited too early. Many extraction games come to PS Plus precisely because they need a lifeline, and the first-month player spike doesn't always last.

The racing game leaves us with mixed feelings. We understand it has value as catalog filler, but at this point subscribers expect something more recent in one of PlayStation's most storied competitive genres. For creators, a game that's been seen a thousand times is hard to make work on stream, unless you give it an original spin: challenges, internal leagues or races with ridiculous penalties.

And Earth Defense Force is the wild card. It won't make a name for itself on any competitive circuit, but as community content, with four friends and hordes of giant bugs, it might deliver more laughs than any other game this month. Sometimes that builds a team too.
