Riot hits the brakes: the LoL replay change is pushed back to patch 26.21

Riot Games has backed down, at least for now. According to Marca eSports, the controversial change the company had planned for the League of Legends replay system won't arrive on schedule: it has been pushed back to patch 26.21. With this decision, the developer acknowledges that the change, as originally designed, came at too high a cost for a part of the community that is small in numbers but huge in influence.

And that's the heart of the matter. According to Marca eSports, Riot is now looking for an alternative that protects analysts, coaches and content creators, three groups whose work quite literally depends on reviewing games. For a team like ours, where VOD review is part of every week's routine, anything that touches replays isn't a technical detail or a minor patch note: it's a change to one of our core working tools.

What you need to know

  • Riot Games is postponing the controversial change to LoL replays.
  • The new target is patch 26.21.
  • The company is working on an alternative designed not to harm analysts, coaches and content creators.
  • The source doesn't yet explain what that alternative will involve or what the final version of the change will look like.

Why replays matter so much

If you don't compete, replays might seem like a fun extra: rewatching that pentakill or laughing at a Flash into a wall. If you do compete, they're something else entirely. They're the material you use to fix positioning mistakes, study vision control, review rotations after an objective and prepare scouting on next week's opponent. Without proper access to past games, analysis comes down to memory and gut feeling, and in a game as demanding as LoL, that falls well short.

The same goes for content. Guides, play breakdowns, highlight compilations, educational videos for climbing the ladder: much of what the community watches starts with a replay put to good use. So it's no surprise the controversy escalated so quickly. When a decision hits both the competitive scene and content creators at the same time, backlash is guaranteed.

Who this delay affects

  • Coaches and analysts: they gain time to keep working as they always have and, above all, to see what Riot proposes before adapting their methods.
  • Content creators: their production workflow won't break overnight, although the uncertainty remains.
  • Amateur and semi-pro teams: they're probably the most vulnerable, since they rarely have their own tools or privileged access to data.
  • Players who want to improve: reviewing your own games is still one of the most effective ways to get better.

What changes (and what doesn't)

It's important not to confuse a delay with a cancellation. What Marca eSports reports is that the change has been postponed to 26.21, not scrapped. Riot still intends to make a move; what's changing is the approach, with the aim of finding a solution that doesn't punish those who use replays professionally or creatively. Until the company publishes the details, any conclusion about the final version is pure speculation.

Our take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we see this with a mix of relief and skepticism. Relief, because walking back a decision is healthy and shows that Riot listens when the competitive community speaks up. Skepticism, because the obvious question is how a change that hit analysts, coaches and creators so directly got this far without anyone stopping it sooner. These groups aren't some invisible niche: they hold up much of the ecosystem that keeps LoL alive outside the client.

What we're asking from Riot is simple: transparency and genuine consultation. Explain the alternative clearly, test it properly and talk to teams, coaches and creators at every level, not just the big organizations. The Spanish-speaking scene, with teams spread across the Americas and Europe, is usually the last to find out and the first to take the hit with no safety net. A delay only makes sense if the extra time is spent listening.

And a piece of advice for our community: don't rely on a single tool. While we wait for 26.21, it's a good time to organize your review material, document what you learn from every scrim and have a plan B. If the final change is reasonable, you lose nothing; if it isn't, you'll be ready.
