Sega has the second year of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds ready to go, and it's anything but light. The roadmap includes a 1v1 Duel Mode built for head-to-head showdowns, free content starring Bayonetta and the start of a lineup of six paid DLC packs that kicks off with the Godzilla Pack on November 3, 2026. As reported by Gamereactor Spain, which in turn cites information from Insider Gaming, all of this comes alongside permanent price cuts for the base game and the digital deluxe edition.

Why does this matter to us? Because a kart racer betting on a one-on-one mode, with full information about your rival on screen, is making a clearly competitive design choice. And because lowering the entry price right as a content schedule begins is the classic move to reignite a community. If you compete or create content, Year 2 could be the perfect time to get back on the track.

What you need to know

  • 1v1 Duel Mode: one racer against another, with an exclusive Duel Boost gauge that grants bursts of speed.
  • Six paid DLC packs on the roadmap; the first, dedicated to Godzilla, arrives on November 3, 2026.
  • Bayonetta joins as free content for all players.
  • Grand Master Plate: a new gadget that unlocks a seventh slot, the Super Slot.
  • Permanent price cut for the base game and the digital deluxe edition.

How Duel Mode works

The big gameplay addition in Year 2 is this one-on-one mode. Its centerpiece is the Duel Boost gauge, which fills up over time and also when you use items, letting you unleash bursts of speed at just the right moment. On top of that comes something rare for the genre: you'll be able to see your opponent's items, gadgets and position. In other words, less blind luck and more reading your rival, resource management and timing.

Sega has prepared several ways to play it:

FormatWhat it involves
CPU Rival DuelsDuels against the AI
Online matchmakingOpen matches against other players
Limited-time eventsBest-of-10 series
Races with friendsCustomizable duels

The other addition with a direct impact on competition is the Grand Master Plate. This gadget adds a seventh slot, the Super Slot, reserved for gadgets that take up a single space and that get boosted effects when placed there. Translation: the build meta is going to shift, and whoever finds the winning combination first will have an edge during the opening weeks.

Godzilla opens the floodgates for paid content

The first paid pack, the Godzilla Pack, arrives on November 3 with the Godzilla Escape track and vehicles inspired by Godzilla, King Ghidorah and Mothra. Next on the list is an Evangelion pack. There are no details yet on the rest of the six planned DLC packs, so we'll have to wait for Sega to reveal more.

The mix makes the strategy clear: collaborations with highly recognizable franchises from outside the Sonic universe, designed to attract new audiences, while the free content, with Bayonetta as the headliner, keeps existing players happy.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're certain: Duel Mode is the best part of this announcement. Kart racers have always struggled to be taken seriously as competitive games, because item chaos punishes whoever is in first place far too much. A 1v1 format with visible rival information and best-of-10 series is exactly what a scene needs to grow: readable matches, comebacks driven by decisions rather than luck, and a format that's very easy to broadcast.

That said, we also have our reservations. The Grand Master Plate's Super Slot could be a great idea or a headache: if a single boosted gadget becomes mandatory, the meta will narrow and duels will end up as mirror matches. And six paid DLC packs always raise the same question: will there be performance-affecting content locked behind a paywall? If the Godzilla or Evangelion vehicles bring real advantages, the competitive scene will feel it. Hopefully Sega keeps paid content limited to cosmetics and tracks.

For content creators, the outlook is very tempting. Godzilla and Evangelion are huge draws for thumbnails and clips, best-of-10 duels lend themselves to community challenges, and the price cut makes it easier for your followers to jump in. If you've ever wanted to run internal CrossWorlds tournaments, now is the time.

What do you think?

Does a 1v1 with full rival information suit a kart racer, or does it take away some of its charm? Are you picking up the Godzilla Pack or waiting to see what Evangelion brings? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord: would you sign up for an internal Underworld Lordz Duel Mode tournament?
