Torchlight Infinite, the free-to-play ARPG on Steam that prides itself on always running at full speed, is launching a new season with a name that sounds wonderful to us here in the newsroom: Tartarus. According to PCGamesN, the headline feature is a prison-themed farming mechanic that lets you lock enemies up and then squeeze them for even more loot. The package is rounded out by faster loot drops and a new hero trait for Youga.

Why does it matter? Because in a seasonal ARPG, every reset redefines which builds rule, which farming routes pay off and which content is worth recording or streaming. A mechanic that turns enemies into a resource you can store and cash in at your own pace changes the logic of efficiency, and in this genre efficiency is everything. Plus, with a season inspired by the underworld, Underworld Lordz simply had to talk about it.

What you need to know

  • Torchlight Infinite's new season is called Tartarus.
  • It introduces a prison-themed farming mechanic: you can lock up enemies to farm them and get more loot.
  • Loot drops will be faster, reinforcing the fast pace that defines the game.
  • Youga gets a new hero trait.
  • The game is still free on Steam, so there is no barrier to entry for trying out the season.

What changes with Tartarus

The prison as a farming engine

The core idea is simple to explain and potentially deep in practice: instead of clearing a map and moving on, you can set enemies aside, keep them under lock and key and turn them into a source of extra rewards. The source doesn't give specific numbers on how much extra loot you get or the exact conditions of the system, so we'll have to wait for the community to break it down. What is clear is the intent: to give players a layer of decision-making about which enemies are worth capturing and when to cash them in.

Mechanics like this tend to create two very different kinds of player: those who ignore it and stick to their usual route, and those who optimize it down to the last second. In a game that lives on speed, that second path is the one that will end up defining the most efficient routes and, most likely, the most-watched guides of the season.

Faster loot and a nod to Youga

The promise of quicker drops fits the game's identity, which has always been about intense sessions with no downtime. For players short on time, that's good news: more reward per session. For those competing to be among the first to complete seasonal objectives, it means the pace of progression will be even more demanding.

As for Youga, the new hero trait is the most concrete addition for those who already main the hero. The source doesn't go into detail about exactly what it does, so it remains to be seen whether it opens up new builds or simply strengthens existing ones.

Our take

We like the direction. Locking up enemies to farm them is the kind of mechanic that gives a season its own identity, something not every ARPG manages when it releases content at a steady pace. For content creators, it's also gold: it sparks questions, experimentation, tier lists and debates about the optimal route, which is exactly what fuels the first days of any season.

That said, we also see risks. More loot per enemy combined with faster drops could lead to reward inflation if the balance isn't carefully tuned. When everything drops faster, the value of each item goes down and the sense of progression fades within a few weeks. And if the prison ends up being mandatory for competitive farming, what was sold as a fun option could become just another repetitive chore.

As for Youga, an update focused on a single hero always leaves their loyal players happy and everyone else waiting. For competitive players, the question is simple: does it change the meta or is it just a minor detail? Until we see the trait in action, we prefer caution over excitement.

What do you think?

Tartarus arrives with a clear pitch: more control over your enemies and more loot per minute. It could be the season that hooks players who had left the game, or the one that speeds up burnout for the most dedicated. Are you going to build your own enemy prison to squeeze out every drop, or do you think all that loot will end up breaking the economy? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
