Every so often a game nobody had on their radar shows up and suddenly everyone is talking about it. This time it's War Dogs, the shooter from Bulkhead that has just launched in early access on Steam and, according to Gamereactor España, has already passed 1.25 million copies sold before even finishing its first weekend on the market.

The number doesn't come alone: SteamDB recorded a peak of 340,171 concurrent players, which puts War Dogs at 46th place for most simultaneous players in the platform's history. For an early access title from a studio that isn't a huge multinational, it's the kind of launch that demands a closer look, especially from the competitive side.

What you need to know

  • War Dogs sold more than 1.25 million copies on Steam, a figure confirmed by Bulkhead itself.
  • It reached a peak of 340,171 concurrent players, 46th all-time according to Steam metrics compiled by SteamDB.
  • The game is in early access, meaning it is not yet the final version.
  • Bulkhead has promised console versions, but not until 2028, likely alongside the PC 1.0 release.
  • These numbers were reached before the first full weekend, so they could still grow.

A debut that breaks the early access scale

What stands out isn't just the volume, but the speed. Selling more than a million copies in the first few days is something usually associated with established franchises backed by massive marketing campaigns, not a project arriving on Steam with an early access label. The fact that its concurrent player peak also lands it in the platform's all-time top 50 speaks to a community that didn't just buy the game, but is playing it en masse at the same time.

Here is the data the source has reported so far:

Consoles: a long wait that could hurt

The other side of the story is the timeline. Bulkhead confirmed that War Dogs will come to Xbox and PlayStation, but not before 2028, which would line it up with the jump to version 1.0 on PC. In practice, this means that for a long stretch the game's community will be PC-only, with everything that implies: the meta, the strategies and the first recognizable names will take shape without half of the potential audience at the table.

For a shooter with ambitions of building a scene, that's no small detail. Console players who join in 2028 will be stepping into an ecosystem where PC players have a two-year head start, and historically that creates friction, both in terms of balance and community.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom we're looking at War Dogs with enthusiasm, but also with caution. First-week player peaks say a lot about initial interest and very little about retention. We've seen too many shooters blow up on Steam and lose half their players within a month when the content doesn't keep up. What will decide whether War Dogs becomes a scene or a fad is what Bulkhead does over the coming months of early access: update cadence, competitive tools, private match support and an anticheat that's up to the task.

For the team's competitive players, the advice is clear: now is the time to get in. When a game launches with a base like this, the first to master the meta are the ones who later have the edge in community tournaments, and sponsorship and event opportunities show up early. For content creators, the logic is the same: a game with 340,000 people online at once is an audience hungry for guides, clips and analysis, and there are still very few Spanish-speaking voices filling that space.

What does worry us is the decision to leave consoles out until 2028. We understand that a studio of Bulkhead's size has to prioritize, but a huge part of our community in the Americas plays on PlayStation and Xbox, and two years is an eternity in this genre. If the game wants to become a real esport, it will need that player base sooner, not later.

What do you think?

War Dogs has the numbers to be the next big competitive shooter, but also all the risks of an early access title with more players than content. We're already playing it and we want to hear from the community: do you think War Dogs will hold on to this player base until 2028, or is it another Steam hype wave that fizzles out in a month?
