EA Sports FC 27 tops GAME's September chart despite launching at the end of the month

September brought a sales chart packed with new releases at GAME stores in Spain, but the throne still belongs to the usual king. As reported by Vandal, the retail chain has confirmed that EA Sports FC 27 was the best-selling game of the month in its stores, and it pulled that off despite only going on sale in the last few days of September. Two heavyweight launches follow: Marvel's Wolverine in second place and Silent Hill: Townfall in third.

Why does this matter beyond being a fun fact? Because it confirms, once again, that EA's football series doesn't need a full month to dominate. A few days are enough for it to outsell big-budget action and horror titles that had been on shelves for weeks. For those of us who live and breathe competition and content creation, it's a reminder of where the mainstream audience's attention is right as the season kicks off.

What you need to know

  • EA Sports FC 27 was September's number one seller at GAME stores in Spain, despite launching at the end of the month.
  • Marvel's Wolverine and Silent Hill: Townfall round out the podium.
  • The top 10 is dominated by recent releases: The Blood of the Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and Orbitals.
  • Two veterans are holding strong: Grand Theft Auto V in seventh place and Minecraft closing out the list.
  • The data only covers GAME stores, not the Spanish market as a whole.

September's top 10, spot by spot

Here is the chart released by GAME and reported by Vandal:

RankGame
1EA Sports FC 27
2Marvel's Wolverine
3Silent Hill: Townfall
4The Blood of the Dawnwalker
5Onimusha: Way of the Sword
6Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave
7Grand Theft Auto V
8Orbitals
9Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
10Minecraft

What stands out most is the variety. There's football, superhero action, psychological horror, open-world RPG, sword-fighting action, turn-based strategy and social simulation. Also worth highlighting is The Blood of the Dawnwalker, an RPG made with the involvement of former The Witcher 3 developers, which has climbed into fourth place, no small feat for a brand-new IP.

The evergreens that never leave

The fact that GTA V and Minecraft keep showing up in a month this packed with new releases says a lot about their pull. They work as a safe gift, as a gateway for new players and, in GTA's case, as a roleplay and content platform that keeps drawing an audience. Keep in mind, though, that this is a snapshot of one specific retailer: it doesn't include other stores or, necessarily, all digital sales.

Our take

Here in the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're not surprised that FC 27 took gold, but we do find it telling that it did so with so few days on the market. Every year we hear that the community is tired of the formula, that Ultimate Team is a wallet-draining machine and that the changes are cosmetic. And every year the sales say otherwise. For competitive players, this means one clear thing: the FC scene will keep filling up with newcomers, and the first few months are the ideal time to climb the leaderboards before the meta settles.

For content creators, there are two takeaways. On one hand, FC 27 guarantees searches and views, but it's also the most saturated space out there. On the other, the top 10 is full of new releases where there's still room to stand out: Silent Hill: Townfall guides, Onimusha challenges, build breakdowns for The Blood of the Dawnwalker or strategy sessions in Fire Emblem. If you want to stand out, you may be better off becoming the go-to voice for a growing game than being one of thousands in the same old mode.

And one criticism: these rankings without unit figures fall short. Knowing the order is nice, but without numbers we can't tell whether FC 27 won by a narrow margin or in a landslide, or compare it with previous years. We hope retailers start sharing more complete data; it helps the community understand the market, not just talk about who came out on top.

What do you think?

Are you already competing in FC 27, or have you jumped into one of September's new releases? Maybe Silent Hill, Wolverine or Dawnwalker has hooked you more than this year's football game.
