Fortnite Is Heading to Linux and Epic Revamps Its Store: A Double Twist Nobody Saw Coming

Epic Games made two announcements at once, and neither was predictable. As reported by Movistar eSports, the company has confirmed that Fortnite is coming to Linux soon and, on top of that, a new version of the Epic Games Store is already available. The outlet itself describes both moves as surprising, and it's hard to disagree.

Why does it matter? Because for years Linux has been territory Epic kept at arm's length, especially when it came to its flagship battle royale. If Fortnite makes the jump, it opens a door for people who play outside Windows and, along the way, sends a signal to the entire industry. And the revamped store is Epic's main way of competing on PC, so any change there affects how we buy, discover and play games.

What you need to know

  • Epic Games has announced that Fortnite will be available on Linux in the near future.
  • The source does not give a release date for that version.
  • The new version of the Epic Games Store has been available since the moment of the announcement.
  • Movistar eSports points out that both announcements came as a surprise.

Context: why this is so surprising

For a long time, the Linux community has watched Fortnite stay out of reach while other games found ways to run on the penguin OS. Epic's decision to now back this platform is a change of attitude that deserves attention, although caution is warranted: for now, all we know is that it's coming soon. There's no timeline and no technical details in the available information, so anything beyond that is speculation.

For the competitive ecosystem, the big question is how this version will handle the demands of online play: stability, performance and, above all, a reliable anti-cheat system. These are points Epic will need to clarify before any serious player considers moving their setup.

A store looking for its place

The other announcement is more immediate: the Epic Games Store has been revamped and you can try it right now. Epic's store has spent years trying to gain ground on PC with exclusives and free games, but it has also drawn criticism for its user experience. A new version is the perfect opportunity to fix those shortcomings. The source doesn't specify exactly which features have changed, so we recommend opening it up and drawing your own conclusions.

Our take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we see it clearly: bringing Fortnite to Linux is good news, but it's only as good as its execution. A port announced without a date is a promise, not a product. For a competitive player, what counts is that the game performs just as well, that there are no differences in input lag or stability, and that match integrity is guaranteed. If the Linux version arrives half-finished, nobody with something on the line in a tournament will use it.

For content creators, there's an interesting angle here. Many streamers and editors already work with open-source tools, and some would rather do without Windows altogether. Being able to play, record and stream Fortnite from the same system would be a strong argument. That said, we're asking Epic for transparency: dates, requirements and what compatibility it will have with standard capture software.

As for the store, we'll be a bit more skeptical. Epic has promised improvements before, and the community has rightly been demanding. A new interface is nice, but what the Epic Games Store really needs is to earn players' trust day in and day out, not just with flashy launches. We'll give it a chance and let you know what we think once we've used it for a while.
