Playground Games has finally put a date on the arrival of Forza Horizon 6 on PlayStation 5: January 26. As reported by Gamereactor Spain, the British studio has made it official and, in the process, laid out a schedule that had been up in the air for months. Until now, the port for Sony's console sat in a vague release window announced in September, and the precise date brings an end to a period of uncertainty for players who had been waiting for the series outside the Xbox ecosystem.
The news matters for two reasons. The first is obvious: one of the most popular arcade racers on the market is landing on a platform with a huge console player base, and that changes the size of the community that competes, creates content and organizes events. The second is more subtle: the game's first expansion launches on January 21 on all platforms, five days before the standard PS5 debut, and pre-ordering the Premium Edition grants up to five days of early access. In other words, the schedule is built so that those who pay more start earlier and reach the expansion on the very day it launches.
What you need to know
- PS5 date: Forza Horizon 6 launches on PlayStation 5 on January 26, as confirmed by Playground Games.
- First expansion: it arrives on all platforms on January 21, as an event separate from the full PS5 release.
- Early access: pre-ordering the Premium Edition gives up to five days' head start, so those players can begin on January 21 and enjoy the expansion from day one.
- Change of plans: back in September the studio was talking about a broader release window; the final date is a slight adjustment compared to what was announced.
- Sources: the details come from Playground Games and have been picked up by outlets such as Video Games Chronicle, as well as Gamereactor Spain.
A schedule built in layers
The most striking thing about the announcement is not the date itself, but the way everything is staggered. Playground Games separates three moments: the launch of the expansion, the start of early access and the standard PS5 release. The first two coincide on January 21; the third comes five days later. For those already playing on other platforms, the expansion is simply new content. For those waiting for the game on PS5, however, the expansion exists before the base game itself does on their console, unless they have pre-ordered the Premium Edition.
That is the detail worth reading carefully. Pre-ordering the higher-tier edition does not just move up the entry date; it syncs the PS5 player with the rest of the community on the day the expansion launches. If what you care about is reaching the first events and leaderboards with the same amount of track time as everyone else, the Premium Edition is the only route Playground Games offers to avoid starting five days behind.
| Milestone | Date | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| First expansion | January 21 | All platforms |
| Early access (Premium Edition pre-order) | From January 21 | Up to five days' head start |
| Standard PS5 launch | January 26 | PlayStation 5 players |
What changed compared to what was promised
Gamereactor Spain points out that in September the studio was still talking about a release window for the port, with no specific day. The definitive January date is a slight change from that plan. It is not a dramatic delay or a cancellation, but it is an adjustment worth noting: the announced window and the final date do not fully line up. For PS5 players who had been waiting for months, the good news is that there is now a day marked on the calendar rather than a vague promise.
Our take
At Underworld Lordz, we are glad to see Forza Horizon come to PS5. More players means more competition on the leaderboards, more people at community events and a bigger audience for anyone making racing content. But the launch design leaves a bittersweet taste. Selling five days of early access right when the expansion launches turns the Premium Edition pre-order into a practical obligation for anyone who takes the early rankings seriously. It is not pay-to-win in the classic sense, but it is paying to not arrive late.
For content creators, the math is clear: if you want to cover the expansion on release day and speak to the PS5 audience from minute one, you need the higher-tier edition. That is exactly what the studio is going for, and it is legitimate, but we would prefer early access to be sold as a bonus rather than as the only way to avoid being left out of the conversation for nearly a week.
That said, what matters is that the date exists. A port announced with precision is better than a vague window, and if Playground delivers on January 26 and the PS5 version holds up alongside the others, the community will come out ahead. What we ask is that the standard edition not end up as the poor relation of the launch.
What do you think?
We want to know whether you plan to pre-order the Premium Edition to jump in on January 21 or whether you would rather wait for the standard release on the 26th and pay less. Do you think it is fair for five days of early access to be sold alongside an expansion, or do you believe it is a practice we should reject as a community?
