The arcades of the 90s are knocking on the door again. QUByte Interactive has announced Gaelco Sports Collection, a compilation that revives five cabinets from Gaelco, the Barcelona-based company behind some of the most memorable Spanish arcade games of that decade. The collection goes on sale on October 22 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC, on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, according to a report from Vandal.
Why should you care if you're into today's competitive scene? Because the package includes World Rally Championship and World Rally 2, two games developed by fellow Spanish studio Zigurat Software that pulled off something rare for a Spanish developer at the time: international success. It's a piece of Spanish gaming history that's once again within reach of anyone with a modern console or a PC, with no need to hunt down an original cabinet or resort to unofficial workarounds.

What you need to know
- Gaelco Sports Collection launches on October 22, published by QUByte Interactive.
- It will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
- It includes five games: World Rally Championship, World Rally 2, Snowboard Championship, Squash and Touch and Go.
- Both World Rally games were made by Zigurat Software and rank among the biggest international hits of that era.
- The lineup combines racing, snowboarding, squash and volleyball in a single compilation.
Gaelco, Zigurat and an era that left its mark
Gaelco was founded in Barcelona and became one of the leading names in the Spanish arcade industry during the 90s. In an industry dominated by Japanese and American giants, a Spanish studio getting its cabinets into arcades around the world was a real achievement. The partnership with Zigurat Software on the World Rally games was probably its strongest calling card, so it makes sense that the collection puts them front and center.
For those who grew up feeding coins into the machine at their local hangout, this compilation is a straight trip down memory lane. For younger generations, who know rally through modern sims packed with telemetry, it's a chance to discover where part of Spain's arcade tradition comes from: short sessions, a demanding difficulty curve and that "just one more go" feeling that defines the genre.
The five games in the collection
| Game | Genre | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| World Rally Championship | Racing | Developed by Zigurat Software |
| World Rally 2 | Racing | Developed by Zigurat Software |
| Snowboard Championship | Snowboarding | Gaelco arcade game |
| Squash | Squash | Gaelco arcade game |
| Touch and Go | Volleyball | Gaelco arcade game |
Our take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this: reviving Spain's arcade legacy is great news, and it's long overdue. That said, a retro compilation lives or dies by the details, and so far the available information doesn't cover them. Emulation quality, input latency, display filters, save states and extra modes are what separate a carefully crafted tribute from a simple ROM dump. Until we can try it ourselves, we're staying cautious.
From a competitive standpoint, World Rally has huge potential. A time-based arcade rally game is perfect ground for community challenges, time attack races between friends or even small speedrun tournaments. If QUByte includes online leaderboards, which hasn't been confirmed yet, the collection could have a much longer life than nostalgia compilations usually do. If it doesn't, it'll be up to the community to organize, and that's something we're pretty good at.
For content creators, the appeal is obvious: nostalgia, Spanish gaming history and quick sessions that work great on stream and in short-form content. Our only reservation is the rest of the package. Snowboard Championship, Squash and Touch and Go don't carry the same weight as the two World Rally games, and the collection's real value will depend heavily on the final price, which hasn't been announced. If it's sold as what it is, a piece of gaming heritage at a reasonable price, it'll have our full support.
What do you think?
Did you ever play World Rally in an arcade, or will you be discovering it for the first time? We'd love to set up a time trial challenge once the collection is out. Would you sign up to race against the rest of the team? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
