QSSR: The Standard PS5 Finally Gets AI Upscaling, and That Changes the Game

Sony has just made a move few people saw coming. The original PS5, the one many of us have hooked up to the TV or the streaming monitor, is getting AI-powered image upscaling. According to Vandal, the company has unveiled Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a technology designed specifically for the console's standard model. It launches today in two of the catalog's heavy hitters: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.

Why does it matter? Until now, AI image reconstruction was one of the biggest reasons to upgrade to the PS5 Pro. Sony's decision to bring a version of that technology to the base model says a lot about where this generation is heading: performance no longer depends on hardware alone, but on how well an algorithm can reconstruct the pixels the console can't render on its own.

What You Need to Know

  • QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony's new AI upscaler, designed for the standard PS5.
  • It debuts today in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
  • It builds on PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the system already used by the PS5 Pro.
  • It comes out of Project Amethyst, the collaboration between Sony and AMD to develop AI-based graphics technologies.
  • It's a lighter alternative: the original PSSR demanded too much computing power for the base PS5.

From PS5 Pro to the Original PS5: What Changes

The key word here is "lightweight." Sony acknowledges that PSSR's computational demands made it impossible to port as-is to the standard console. Instead of giving up, it took a different route: a simplified neural network architecture and an implementation optimized specifically for the PS5's hardware. In practice, QSSR analyzes frames and uses AI to reconstruct them, with the goal of bringing the base model an upgrade that until now was exclusive to the Pro.

Where it comes from matters too. Project Amethyst is the Sony–AMD partnership focused on AI-driven graphics, and QSSR is one of its most visible results for the general public. This isn't an isolated patch; it's one piece of a roadmap shared by both companies.

Who does this affect? Anyone playing on a standard PS5, whose console suddenly gains a tool that seemed reserved for the higher-end model. And, indirectly, studios, which now have one more resource to squeeze more out of the hardware without sacrificing as much sharpness or smoothness.

Our Take

Here in the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we see this as good news, plain and simple. Bringing AI upscaling to the base model democratizes an upgrade that until now came with a premium-console price tag. For a competitive player, what matters is a clear image and a stable frame rate; if QSSR frees up resources so games run more smoothly without turning into a blurry mess, that's a win for everyone who isn't going to shell out for a Pro.

That said, it's time to be critical. "Lighter" inevitably means compromises. The quality of AI upscaling depends heavily on each implementation, and fast motion is where these techniques tend to show their seams. On top of that, the launch comes in two single-player adventures. They're great for showing off, but our community wants to know what happens when you have to react in milliseconds. Until QSSR reaches competitive titles and we see it under pressure, we'll keep our applause cautious.

For content creators, the takeaway is interesting: a cleaner image on base hardware means better-looking captures and streams without upgrading your setup. And it leaves Sony with an awkward question: if the standard PS5 gets a version of the Pro's biggest technical selling point, what's left to justify the higher-end model? We'll have to see how big the real gap between PSSR and QSSR turns out to be.

What Do You Think?

QSSR might be just the boost the original PS5 needed, or it might end up as a modest improvement that only shines in trailers. We're already eager to try it out. Do you think AI upscaling on the base PS5 will change the way you play or create content, or is the PS5 Pro still the better deal for you? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
