The launch of Gears of War: E-Day hasn't been the victory lap many were expecting. The game arrived on Xbox Series and PC on October 6, and over the past few hours a large part of its community has run into unexpected disconnections, sync errors and trouble getting into matches. According to Vandal, the issues weren't limited to multiplayer: they also hit players who just wanted to make progress in the campaign.
What initially looked like the usual server congestion that comes with any big launch turned out to be something more serious. The Coalition has confirmed that the outages are caused by DDoS attacks targeting the game's online services. And that matters a lot: this isn't a capacity miscalculation that can be fixed by adding more servers, but an outside attack that is putting the infrastructure of one of Xbox's biggest launches of the year to the test.

What You Need to Know
- Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6 on Xbox Series and PC.
- Players have reported disconnections, sync errors and difficulty getting into matches.
- The problems affected multiplayer as well as some players trying to continue the campaign.
- The Coalition has officially confirmed that the cause is DDoS attacks against its online services.
- The studio says it is working to stop these attacks from continuing to affect the community.
What Happened and Why It Hurts So Much
Broadly speaking, a DDoS attack floods servers with massive amounts of traffic so they stop responding to legitimate users. For a game like Gears, whose competitive heart beats online, the impact is immediate: matches that won't load, rounds cut off halfway through and progress that doesn't sync. The fact that the problem also spilled over into the campaign highlights something we've been pointing out for years: when a game relies on a connection even for its single-player experience, any outage becomes everyone's problem, not just for those playing online.
The studio responded with a statement acknowledging the intermittent disconnections and other issues, explaining their cause and committing to strengthening its protection. For now, according to the information reported by Vandal, there are no public details on who is behind the attacks or a specific timeline for considering the problem resolved, so it's worth keeping a close eye on official updates.
Who It Affects
Everyone who has bought the game, but three groups in particular: competitive players, whose practice sessions and ranked matches are being cut short right when the scene is taking shape; content creators, who rely on stable streams during launch week, when interest in the game is at its peak; and campaign players, who shouldn't have to deal with server problems just to enjoy the story.
Our Take
To be fair, a DDoS isn't directly the studio's fault, and The Coalition deserves credit for coming out and explaining it clearly instead of hiding behind a generic "we're investigating." Transparency is the bare minimum a community that has paid for the game should expect, and that box has been ticked here. That said, the facts are stubborn: big launches are a regular target for this kind of attack, and a release of this caliber should arrive with protection to match. The attack explains the problem, but it doesn't make it acceptable for players.
From a competitive standpoint, this is especially sensitive. The first few weeks of a shooter are when teams form, metas are discovered and the hype that sustains a scene for years is built. Every disconnection mid-round is a lost match, a broken streak or a practice session thrown away. If E-Day wants a serious competitive circuit, its infrastructure has to be as solid as its gunplay.
And the campaign issue is what we find most worthy of criticism. Someone being unable to progress through the story because of an attack on the servers is the clearest proof that requiring an online connection for single-player modes remains an unnecessary risk. Hopefully this episode leads to a rethink of that design, because players shouldn't be the ones footing the bill for the attackers.
