Rockstar Games has made it clear that in Grand Theft Auto VI, escaping the law will not be the easy ride the series had gotten us used to. According to Vandal, citing the latest issue of Game Informer, the police in the game, which launches on November 19, will be smarter than ever, and every crime we commit will force us to rethink how we look and what vehicle we are driving. Chases will also be more intense and demanding than in previous entries.

The juiciest new detail is that Jason and Lucia will be able to split up for a while to divide the officers' attention and relieve the pressure on the pair. This is no minor mechanic: it is a statement of intent about the kind of game Rockstar wants, one where the wanted system stops being a simple star counter and becomes a puzzle of identity, witnesses and cameras.

What you need to know

  • Six wanted stars are back, restoring the maximum pursuit level from previous entries.
  • Witnesses and cameras feed the police with clues about the protagonists' appearance and about whether one or two criminals are involved.
  • After every crime you will need to change vehicle, clothes or hairstyle to break the description the officers are working with.
  • Jason and Lucia will be able to split up temporarily to divide police attention and lower the intensity of the hunt.
  • Release date: November 19, according to the information reported by Vandal.

From star counter to identity system

Until now, the wanted level in GTA worked like a heat bar: you committed a crime, the stars went up, you hid in an alley and waited for them to drop. What Game Informer describes is something else entirely. The police in GTA 6 build a picture of who you are from what witnesses and the city's cameras see. If someone saw you in a red jacket getting out of a specific car, that combination becomes your problem until you break it.

That is why changing your clothes, hairstyle or vehicle is no longer a cosmetic detail but part of the escape plan. And that is also why having two protagonists has consequences: if a witness notices that the job was pulled off by two people, the police will be looking for a pair. Splitting Jason and Lucia up for a while addresses exactly that, because two individuals on their own fit the description far worse than a duo moving together.

Covering your tracks: what we already saw in the gameplay

The idea does not come out of nowhere. In the video Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, the protagonists got rid of the vehicle used in the getaway so they would leave no clues behind. Seen in light of the new information, that scene was a demonstration of the system in action: the car is evidence, and evidence gets destroyed. Everything suggests the game will reward those who plan the escape as seriously as the heist itself.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz, we think this is the most interesting design change Rockstar has confirmed to date. For years, GTA's police have been a dumb obstacle you got past with a tunnel, a helicopter or a garage. A system that forces you to think about your appearance, your car and whether it is worth splitting the team up turns every crime into a small strategy game. For competitive players, that is fuel: there is room to optimize escape routes, learn which witnesses matter most and discover which combination of changes clears your record fastest.

For content creators, the potential is even greater. A six-star chase with the pair splitting up, changing their look in an alley and reuniting later is exactly the kind of sequence that shares itself. Mechanics that generate unpredictable stories are what keep a game alive on Twitch and YouTube long after launch, and the ingredients for that are here.

That said, let's not count our chickens before they hatch. Smarter police sounds great in a magazine, but in practice it can translate into frustration if the system detects things the player cannot see or understand. If it is not clear why an officer still recognizes you after you have changed clothes, it will feel unfair rather than challenging. Rockstar needs to communicate clearly what clues the police have at any given moment. If it pulls that off, we will get the best getaway in the series; if not, we will get one mission restart after another.

What do you think?

We are already imagining how to coordinate two players if these mechanics make their way into online play in some form, but we want to hear how you see it. Do you think police who hunt you based on your appearance will make the game more exciting, or will it end up being a headache? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord: would you rather split Jason and Lucia up mid-getaway or keep the pair together no matter what?
