HoYoverse has set a date for the next major update to Zenless Zone Zero. As reported by Vandal, version 3.3, titled Journey to the Sky, launches on October 21 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and mobile devices as a free download. The package brings two new S-Rank Agents, Phoenix and Severian, more main story chapters, events with free rewards and, as the main attraction, the chance to pilot combat mechs.
Why does this matter to us at Underworld Lordz? Because live-service games thrive on novelty, and this isn't just another banner with a pretty new face. Adding pilotable giant robots to an action RPG that until now was played on foot at street level is a change of pace that affects how you fight, how guides get written and what content will flood community streams and videos in the coming weeks. If you play ZZZ seriously or create content about it, this version hits you head-on.

What You Need to Know
- Date and platforms: 3.3 arrives on October 21 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and mobile, and it's a free update.
- Two S-Rank Agents: Phoenix and Severian join the playable roster, which means planning your pull resources carefully.
- Mech combat: for the first time you'll be able to climb into a giant robot and fight from the cockpit, a mechanic never before seen in the game.
- Story: the plot moves forward on the floating island of Roscaelifer, with access to Booastrum cut off and an infiltration of Quietude Isle.
- Events and freebies: there will be special events with free rewards for anyone who logs in during the version.
Roscaelifer, Quietude Isle and the Karma Cores
The storyline of Journey to the Sky picks up where the main plot left off. As Vandal reports, the conflict on the floating island of Roscaelifer intensifies after access to Booastrum is blocked, and the protagonists will have to sneak into the occupied area of Quietude Isle. During that mission they'll uncover new secrets about the three Sunbringers and the enigmatic Karma Cores, two concepts that look set to be the core of this narrative arc.
For the community this means new chapters to play through, cutscenes to discuss and, in all likelihood, theories to debate on Discord for weeks. HoYoverse usually relies on these mid-cycle versions to set up arc finales, so it's worth not skipping the story if you want to understand where the plot is heading.
Phoenix, Severian and the Mech Cockpit
On the gameplay side, the news has two faces. The first is the Agents: Phoenix and Severian arrive as S-Rank, the highest tier in the game. With the information we have, we can't yet confirm the exact banner order or their full kits, so we recommend waiting for official details before spending a single Polychrome. What is clear is that two S-Ranks in the same version force you to choose, and choosing wrong in a gacha hurts.
The second face is the one that has us most intrigued: mech combat. Zenless Zone Zero has been built around a fast action system, with character swaps and precise parries. Throwing a giant robot into the equation changes the scale, the weight and most likely the rhythm of encounters. We still don't know whether it will be a mechanic limited to certain story missions or something with a presence in the scoring modes, and that difference will determine whether we're talking about filler content or a new piece of the metagame.
Our Take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom we're looking at 3.3 with excitement but without losing our critical eye. Mechs are exactly the kind of bet a live-service game needs to avoid stagnating: a flashy idea, easy to sell in a trailer and with the potential to generate viral clips. If HoYoverse integrates it well, content creators will have fresh material for weeks. If it ends up as a one-afternoon minigame, it will be another pretty promise forgotten by the next version. The track record of many games in the genre forces us to ask for facts, not videos.
The other point that concerns us is the usual one: two S-Rank Agents in the same update. For competitive players who want the optimal team for the scoring modes, this translates into pressure to pull and, often, into spending real money. HoYoverse knows exactly what it's doing by stacking appealing characters together, and our advice is clear: work out what slot each one fills in your roster before opening your wallet. An S-Rank is worth nothing if it doesn't fit with what you already have.
Even so, the overall balance looks positive to us. Free content, new story, events with free rewards and a mechanic that, at least on paper, tries something different. For those who have been away from the game for a while, October 21 is a good excuse to return to New Eridu and check whether the giant robots deliver on their promise.
What Do You Think?
The date is set and the Sunbringers are waiting in Roscaelifer. Are you going to pull for Phoenix, for Severian, or save your resources for later? And do you think mechs will really change how ZZZ is played, or will they be a simple one-version decoration? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord: which Agent are you taking into the cockpit?
