GTA 6 in first person: the leak that challenges what Rockstar said

Rockstar had made it clear: GTA 6 won't hit stores with a full first-person mode. Yet a massive leak has just shown exactly that perspective: driving and exploration sequences seen through the character's eyes. According to information published by Dexerto, the footage is already circulating online and has reopened a debate many considered settled.
Why does it matter so much? Because in an open world, the camera isn't a cosmetic detail. It changes how you drive, how you aim, how you record content and even how you experience the city. If the game can already display that view, the question is no longer whether it will exist but when and in what state. For anyone who makes a living from playing or creating videos, that difference carries a lot of weight.

What you need to know
- A massive GTA 6 leak shows first-person driving and exploration.
- Rockstar has stated that the game won't launch with a full first-person mode.
- The original report comes from Dexerto; it doesn't clarify whether what's shown is a finished feature or an internal test.
- The key nuance lies in two words of the official stance: full and launch.
Leak vs. official word
What stands out isn't just what appears in the footage, but the clash with the studio's message. To understand it better, it helps to put both versions side by side:
| Aspect | What the leak shows | What Rockstar says |
|---|---|---|
| Driving | First-person view behind the wheel | No full first-person mode at launch |
| Exploration | On-foot exploration through the character's eyes | No full first-person mode at launch |
| Status | Unconfirmed: could be work-in-progress footage | Official stance for launch |
Read carefully, Rockstar's statement leaves room for several interpretations. No full mode doesn't mean there's no first-person camera at all: it could be limited to specific situations, such as being in a vehicle. And not being there at launch doesn't rule out it arriving later in an update. There's also the less exciting option: that it's an internal tool that never sees the light of day.
A precedent everyone remembers
It wouldn't be the first time the series has gone down this road. GTA V didn't launch with first person: it added it in its re-release for a new console generation, and for many players it was a completely different way to rediscover Los Santos. On top of that, GTA 6 has already suffered major leaks before, and each new one puts the way the studio communicates its plans to the test once again.
Our take
First, caution. Leaked footage almost never represents the final product, and judging a game by images taken out of context is unfair to the people developing it. That said, the fact that first person works, even if only at a technical level, is a good sign: it shows the foundation is there and that, if Rockstar wants it, the path to a full mode is shorter than it seemed.
For competitive players, the camera is much more than a preference. In shootouts and chases, each perspective offers different advantages and drawbacks, and if the online component ends up mixing both views, there will need to be a conversation about balance and about servers or lobbies with their own rules. We'd rather Rockstar take its time and deliver something polished than ship a half-baked first-person mode that breaks online play.
For content creators, on the other hand, this news is gold. First person opens the door to more cinematic clips, more immersive roleplay and reactions that just don't feel the same in third person. Our criticism is aimed at the communication: when the official word and the leaks seem to contradict each other, the community fills up with rumors. A clearer message about future plans would prevent a lot of confusion.
