GTA 6 on Switch 2: Nintendo Says the Power Is There, the Decision Belongs to Rockstar

GTA 6 will launch on November 19 exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series, with a PC version guaranteed for later but without a specific date. Nintendo Switch 2 is nowhere to be found in those plans, and until now the easy explanation was to assume that the hybrid console simply doesn't measure up technically. As reported by Vida Extra, the president of Nintendo of America, Devon Pritchard, addressed that question in an interview with Variety, and her answer shifts the debate to different ground.

Pritchard made it clear that the decision is not in her hands: Take-Two and Rockstar are the ones who have to talk about it, and on her side there is nothing to announce. But she added something more interesting: in her view, Switch 2 has enough processing and graphics capability to run a title of GTA 6's technical scale. In other words, Nintendo is ruling out the power excuse and pointing directly at the publisher. For a community like ours, with competitive players and content creators spread across the Americas and Europe, that changes the conversation: we are no longer talking about whether the console can, but whether Rockstar wants to.

What You Need to Know

  • Date and platforms: GTA 6 arrives on November 19 only on PS5 and Xbox Series. The PC version is confirmed, but has no date.
  • Switch 2 is out, for now: there is no announcement of any kind for Nintendo's hybrid console.
  • Nintendo's position: Devon Pritchard states that the decision belongs to Take-Two and Rockstar and that she has no news to share.
  • The key quote: the executive maintains that Switch 2 has the computing and graphics power for a game at GTA 6's technical level.
  • A healthy relationship: Take-Two already publishes titles such as GTA: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition and Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo consoles.

Power Versus Will

What makes Pritchard's words interesting is the nuance. A diplomatic answer would have stopped at the first part: it's up to Rockstar, no comment. Instead, the president of Nintendo of America took a stand and defended her console's technical capability for a game that, judging by what we have seen in the Jason and Lucia trailers, will be among the most demanding of this generation. It is a statement of intent aimed outward: Nintendo wants its new machine to be seen as a full-fledged platform for major multiplatform releases, and not as the place where cut-down versions arrive years later.

The context helps explain it. The relationship between Nintendo and Take-Two looks healthy, as Vida Extra points out: both the remastered GTA trilogy and Red Dead Redemption are available on its consoles. There is no underlying commercial conflict, nor an exclusives war. What there is, is a Rockstar schedule that prioritizes PS5 and Xbox Series at launch and PC later, and a Switch 2 that, for now, doesn't even make it onto that official waiting list.

What Actually Changes?

In practical terms, nothing. There is no announced GTA 6 version for Switch 2, nor any hint about when one might exist. What changes is the narrative. If Nintendo itself says power is not the problem, any future absence of the game on the hybrid console will be read as a business decision by Take-Two and not as a hardware limitation. And that puts pressure on Rockstar, which will have to explain why it isn't tapping into such a strong user base if the machine can handle the game.

Our Take

At the Underworld Lordz editorial desk, we take Pritchard's statement with a mix of interest and skepticism. A console having enough power on paper doesn't mean it will get a good version. Rockstar has never been in a hurry with its ports: GTA V hopped from generation to generation and PC always arrived after the consoles. With GTA 6 the pattern repeats, and thinking that Switch 2 will squeeze into that queue in the short term strikes us as wishful thinking.

For the competitive players in our community, moreover, the question is not whether the game can run, but how. Stable frame rate, loading times, input latency and, above all, how the online mode will turn out once Rockstar rolls it out. A handheld version that sacrifices performance to fit on the console is no use to us for serious play or for producing content up to standard. And for creators, recording and streaming from a machine with less technical headroom is an added headache we already know from other ports.

That said, we welcome Nintendo stepping out from behind the power argument and putting the ball in Take-Two's court. If Switch 2 can do it, let them prove it with action. In the meantime, our advice is clear: anyone who wants to play GTA 6 under competitive conditions should go with PS5, Xbox Series, or wait for the PC version. Nintendo's hybrid, if it ever arrives, will be a bonus, not the go-to platform.

What Do You Think?

Nintendo says its console is ready and Rockstar stays silent. We believe that, even if the port is possible, it's not where GTA 6 will be played seriously. Would you buy a GTA 6 version for Switch 2 if it launched with cutbacks, or would you rather wait for PC and play it the way it deserves? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord.
