GTA 6 wants you to steal almost everything: Leonida will be a world ripe for looting

Rockstar Games keeps drip-feeding details about Grand Theft Auto VI, and the latest one goes straight to the heart of the series: crime. As reported by Vandal, Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, explained in an interview with IGN that in the state of Leonida you'll be able to steal "practically anything." We're not just talking about cars or banks: during the press demo, he gave the example of walking into a headphone store and simply walking out with the merchandise.
Why does it matter? Because Nelson also made it clear that money will be an essential part of the gameplay loop. If the economy carries that much weight and almost the entire world can be looted, the way you play GTA changes: less sightseeing and more planning, opportunism and risk. With launch set for November 19, every statement like this paints a slightly clearer picture of what kind of game we're going to get our hands on.

What you need to know
- Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, spoke with IGN about how the world of Leonida reacts to the player's actions.
- According to Rockstar, in GTA 6 you'll be able to steal almost anything, even the inventory of small shops like a headphone store.
- Money will play a central role in the gameplay loop.
- The world won't change as drastically as in Red Dead Redemption 2, but Vice City will feature varied, dynamic events.
- The game launches on November 19.
A living world, but not as ever-changing as Red Dead
One of the most interesting nuances of the interview is the comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2. In the Wild West adventure, the story itself made towns evolve, and you could watch them grow over time. Nelson acknowledges that GTA 6 won't go down that path of such pronounced transformation. Instead, the focus is on the variety of events happening in Vice City and the freedom to interact with practically everything in front of you.
In other words, Rockstar seems to be prioritizing the density and reactivity of the world over the narrative evolution of the map. Rather than a city that changes as the story progresses, the idea is a city that responds to whatever you do at any given moment. It's a subtle difference, but it defines the kind of experience: more systemic, more unpredictable and, potentially, more replayable.
From GTA 5 to GTA 6: from heists to everyday looting
In GTA 5 you could already hold up stores and businesses, so the idea isn't new. What changes, according to Nelson, is the scale: theft stops being a one-off activity in specific locations and becomes something that can happen in any corner of the map. Add to that the fact that money will be key to progression, and petty theft goes from a fun aside to a core gameplay tool.
Our take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're excited, but also cautious. Being able to steal almost anything sounds spectacular in a press demo, but the real question is whether those thefts will actually matter. Grabbing a pair of headphones is fun once; what will make the system work is an economy that makes sense, real consequences and risk that pays off. If money is the backbone of the game, the balance between reward and punishment will be what separates a deep system from a flashy gimmick.
For competitive players, all eyes are on what comes next: if this economy-and-looting logic carries over to the future multiplayer, it could open the door to strategies, optimal farming routes and, of course, exploits the community will find within hours. For content creators, on the other hand, it's pure gold: a world where everything is interactive generates absurd situations, viral clips and challenges like "rob one store of every type" that practically write themselves.
That said, we'd like Rockstar to go beyond the eye-catching headline. We've seen plenty of promises of ultra-interactive worlds that ended up boiling down to a handful of repeated animations. With so much hype built up, GTA 6 has no room to fall short.
What do you think?
Stealing almost anything, an economy that shapes everything and a Vice City packed with events: the pitch sounds powerful on paper. But we want to hear where you stand: are you excited about a GTA focused on looting and money, or would you rather Rockstar went for a story that transforms the world like in Red Dead? Drop by the team chat or our Discord and tell us: what's the first thing you'll steal in Leonida?
