GTA VI on Switch 2: Nintendo responds for the first time (and confirms nothing)

The question has been doing the rounds for months on every forum, every stream and every Discord channel: is GTA VI coming to Nintendo Switch 2? For the first time, someone at Nintendo has spoken on the matter. As reported by IGN Spain, Devon Pritchard, president of Nintendo of America, recently went over the company's plans, from its theme parks to first-party games and titles from other developers, and in that rundown the name of Rockstar's next blockbuster came up.
The fact that Nintendo is touching on the subject at all, even in passing, is news in itself. The house of Mario is usually tight-lipped about third-party titles, and even more so about a game that has not yet been announced for its platform. The underlying idea Pritchard conveys is clear: the launch of Switch 2 opens the door to games from other studios that never made it to the brand's previous consoles. And GTA VI is, by far, the most wanted candidate on that list.

What you need to know
- Who is speaking: Devon Pritchard, president of Nintendo of America, in statements reported by IGN Spain.
- What it's about: a general overview of Nintendo's strategy, covering theme parks, first-party games and the third-party catalogue.
- The key message: Switch 2 opens the door to titles from other companies that previously never reached Nintendo consoles.
- What's missing: any official confirmation that GTA VI will come to Switch 2. This is the first time Nintendo has addressed the topic, not an announcement.
- Who decides: Rockstar has the final say, not Nintendo.
Why Switch 2 changes the conversation
With the first Switch, the same story played out over and over: the big multiplatform releases from other companies arrived late, cut down, or simply never arrived. The console sold enormously well, but its horsepower left it out of a good share of the generation's most demanding titles. That turned Nintendo into an island: unbeatable with its own franchises, but with a third-party catalogue full of gaps.
Switch 2 was born precisely to close that gap. That is why Pritchard's words carry weight: when the president of Nintendo of America insists that the new machine makes it possible to bring over games that were previously impossible, she is sending a message to both players and studios. The subtext is that Nintendo wants a seat at the table for the big conversations, and there is no bigger conversation in the industry right now than GTA VI.
What this means for Rockstar and for players
It is worth tempering expectations a little. Nintendo saying the door is open does not mean Rockstar is going to walk through it. GTA VI is a colossal project, designed to push home console hardware to its limits, and adapting it to a hybrid console would be a major technical and commercial decision that only Rockstar can make. The source contains no confirmation, no date and no figures, and we are not going to make them up either.
For the community, the situation can be read two ways. The optimistic one: Nintendo has stopped hiding and is now openly competing for the same catalogue as PlayStation and Xbox. The realistic one: until Rockstar says something, GTA VI on Switch 2 remains a wish, not a plan. What has changed is the tone. Before, the answer was an awkward silence; now it is a "maybe" said out loud by one of the most important people at the company.
Our take
At Underworld Lordz we see this statement for what it is: a smart communications play. Nintendo knows the GTA VI question comes up in every interview, and instead of dodging it, it has decided to use it to reinforce the message that Switch 2 is a serious console for third-party games. It commits to nothing and promises nothing, but it keeps the console's name in the same sentence as the most anticipated game of the moment. Textbook marketing.
For competitive players, the real question is a different one. If GTA VI did end up coming to Switch 2, would it do so with the same quality and performance as on the other platforms? The experience with the first Switch forces us to be skeptical. A cut-down port, with lower resolution or fewer frames, is fine for playing on the couch, but not for competing or producing content at the level today's audience demands. And when it comes to the online mode, any technical difference between platforms ends up setting the pace for the community.
For content creators, on the other hand, the news is pure gold. The mere possibility of GTA VI on a handheld console already generates videos, debates and clips. Nintendo knows this, which is why it is in its interest to keep the conversation alive. Our recommendation is clear: enjoy the hype, but do not plan your content calendar around an announcement that does not exist yet. If Rockstar takes the step, we will hear it from them, not from a Nintendo interview.
What do you think?
The door is open, but nobody has walked in yet. Some believe GTA VI on Switch 2 is only a matter of time; others think the hardware will never be up to a game of that caliber. Would you buy a Switch 2 just to play GTA VI on the go, or would you rather wait and see it on the most powerful platform? Tell us in the team chat or drop by our Discord to debate it.
