Marvel's Wolverine lets you turn off the scent trail: Insomniac is finally listening to its community

Insomniac has tweaked Marvel's Wolverine once again. According to IGN Spain, the most recent patch adds an option that a large part of the community had been asking for: the choice of whether or not to see the scent trails the game draws on screen. Those cues can now be switched on and off whenever you like through a feature called “Hint”, mapped to a button on the controller.
It may sound like a minor tweak, but it isn't. This is the mechanic that has sparked the most debate around the game, and the way the studio has handled it reflects something bigger: less imposed design and more control in the hands of the player. Whether you're looking for a challenge, creating content or just want to fully step into Logan's shoes, this change affects you.

What you need to know
- Insomniac has released a new update for Marvel's Wolverine, which had already received earlier patches.
- The main change lets you toggle visible scent trails on and off, the game's most controversial mechanic.
- The feature is controlled through an option called “Hint”, tied to a button on the controller.
- It's no longer a permanent aid: each player decides when to use it.
Why Logan's sense of smell split the community
Wolverine without his senses wouldn't be Wolverine. The challenge for any studio is translating a superpower as abstract as smell into something that reads clearly on screen, and the most direct solution is to turn it into a visual cue. The problem with that approach is obvious: a trail that's always visible works like a giant arrow telling you where to go. For some, it's a useful aid; for others, it takes the weight out of exploration and clutters the screen with elements that break immersion.
With the patch, the trail stops being a constant presence and becomes an on-demand tool. That difference is key. The mechanic isn't removed, and players who value it aren't punished: the player is simply handed the switch. And the fact that it sits on a controller button, rather than buried in an options submenu, shows that Insomniac sees it as part of the game's flow and not just another settings toggle.
Who it affects
- Players looking for a challenge: they can explore the levels without constant guidance and find their own way.
- Those who need support: the aid is still there when it's needed, which is good news for accessibility.
- Content creators: they gain control over what appears on screen when recording or streaming.
- Speedrunning communities: a toggle like this could spark debates about categories and rules, something the players themselves will have to settle.
Our take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this: it's the right call, but it comes too late. The fact that something as basic as being able to turn off a visual aid has to be added in a patch says a lot about how many big-budget releases are designed, with an almost obsessive fear that the player might get lost. Wolverine is a hunter; forcing him to follow a glowing line that's always on stripped away part of that identity. We welcome the course correction, but we'd like options like this to come standard from day one.
That said, the way it's been implemented deserves credit. Because it's on a button, “Hint” becomes a tactical decision during play: you use it when you really need it, and not before. For anyone who plays competitively, even if only against their own clock, that adds an interesting layer. And for creators, being able to offer a clean picture on stream or in videos is no small bonus: viewers see the game, not a road map plastered over the level.
One question remains open: if speedrunning communities start forming around the game, will “Hint” be fair game or will it count as an aid that separates categories? That's not Insomniac's decision to make, but the players', and that's where a community shows how healthy it is. What is clear is that giving control to the player is never a bad idea.
What do you think?
Some believe Wolverine's sense of smell needs that visual aid to make sense, while others think the game shines brightest when it leaves you to fend for yourself. Our team has already picked a side. Are you going to play with “Hint” turned on, or switch it off from the very first minute? Let us know in the team chat or drop by our Discord to join the debate.
