PS5 Midnight Black: Sony Releases Its Cheapest Console Yet, but Only in Japan

Sony has made another hardware move, though not in the direction many were expecting. As reported by Vandal, the company has announced a new PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, an all-black version of the disc-free console that will hit stores on November 19. The price is the big draw: 55,000 yen, roughly 310 euros at current exchange rates, which undercuts the models sold outside Japan.
The catch is that the deal comes with fine print, and plenty of it. This PS5 is designed exclusively for the Japanese market and ships with restrictions that prevent it from being used with accounts from other countries, on top of a locked system language. In other words, this is not just a new colorway: it is a regional pricing strategy built to stop it from becoming a target for importers and scalpers. And for a community like ours, spread across the Americas and Europe, that says a lot about how Sony thinks about its markets today.

What You Need to Know
- The PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black goes on sale on November 19, in Japan only.
- It costs 55,000 yen (around 310 euros at the current exchange rate).
- Both the console and the included DualSense feature an all-black finish.
- It offers 825 GB of storage and matches the specs of the Japanese digital model released in November 2025.
- Pre-orders open on October 20, and the console does not support accounts from other countries.
A Black Console Under Lock and Key
An all-black finish has been a recurring request since the PS5 launched, as its white design has divided opinion from day one. Sony finally committing to a dark finish on both the console and the controller is good news aesthetically, and it is doing so with the digital model, the most affordable in the lineup. On the technical side, there are no surprises: it keeps everything the Japan-exclusive Digital Edition unveiled last year already offered, including its 825 GB of storage.
What really matters here are the limitations. Just like that 2025 model, this version locks the system language and does not allow sign-in with accounts registered outside Japan. This lets Sony protect an aggressive pricing policy in a market where PlayStation has been losing ground for some time, without cannibalizing its sales in the rest of the world. Anyone thinking of importing one to save a few euros will end up with a console that, in practice, cannot be used with their usual account or their game library.

Our Take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we see it clearly: it is a logical move for Sony and a bit of a slap in the face for everyone else. For years, PS5 price hikes have been explained away by inflation, manufacturing costs and exchange rates. Seeing the company now offer a noticeably cheaper console when it wants to defend a specific market shows that pricing is also a strategic decision, not just an unavoidable consequence. And that decision, for now, does not include the Americas or Europe.
For competitive players, the account lock turns this edition into an expensive decoration if you live outside Japan: your games, your progress and your subscriptions are tied to your regional account, and without it there is nothing you can do. For content creators, the visual appeal of an all-black finish is obvious, since it looks much better on camera and fits any dark setup, but it is not worth wrestling with a Japanese-language system and no access to your profile just for a nice desk shot.
That said, there is a positive angle: if the model succeeds in Japan, Sony might be encouraged to bring the Midnight Black finish, or at least a price revision, to other regions. We would love to see it, but we would rather not get our hopes up until there is an official announcement. For now, what remains is the feeling that the design so many people asked for exists, but it was not made for us.
What Do You Think?
Do you think it is reasonable for Sony to apply different prices and restrictions depending on the region, or do you believe the community in the Americas and Europe deserves the same opportunities? If this black PS5 came to your country at a similar price, would you buy it or stick with your current model? Tell us where you stand in the team chat or on our Discord.
