Squadron 42 Comes to Steam: Is the Star Citizen Campaign for Real This Time?

Few projects have tested players' patience quite like Squadron 42. As reported by Vandal, Cloud Imperium Games has taken a highly symbolic step: the single-player space adventure set in the Star Citizen universe now has its own Steam page, and you can add it to your wishlist. To mark the occasion, the studio has released a new gameplay trailer that, once again, is a feast for the eyes and a reminder of why so many people are still waiting for this game.
Why does it matter? Because we're talking about a title that has been in development for more than a decade, piling up delays and missed dates until it became something of a running joke in the industry. Showing up on Valve's store doesn't guarantee anything, but it does suggest the commercial machinery is starting to move. When a studio sets up its storefront on PC's biggest platform, it's usually because the finish line is finally in sight.

What You Need to Know
- Steam page is live: Squadron 42 can now be added to your wishlist.
- New gameplay trailer: CIG released it to accompany the game's arrival on the store.
- Launch window: still planned for the second quarter of 2027, meaning between April and June.
- Not a new date: that window was already known; what's new is the Steam presence.
- Caution: until there's a specific day, it's best not to celebrate just yet.
Background: A Development Odyssey
Squadron 42 began as the narrative, single-player side of the Star Citizen universe, the project with which Cloud Imperium Games has built one of the most loyal, and also most divided, communities on PC. While the multiplayer component has evolved in full public view, the campaign has remained shrouded in secrecy, surfacing only occasionally through spectacular trailers and release promises that, time and again, slipped off the calendar.
That troubled history is exactly why every announcement is met with a mix of excitement and skepticism. As Vandal points out, the Q2 2027 window isn't new, so what's changing isn't the when, but the how: the game is taking a step toward traditional distribution and starting to behave like any other commercial release, with its own store page, wishlist and marketing campaign.
What Actually Changes?
For the average player, not much in the short term: there's no exact date or price we can confirm based on the information available. For the studio, however, the Steam page is a powerful tool. Wishlists act as a gauge of genuine interest and feed into the store's visibility algorithms. In other words, CIG is starting to measure how many people are willing to believe one more time, and that also puts pressure on the studio to deliver within the announced window.
Our Take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we have mixed feelings. On the one hand, there's no denying that what we see in the new trailer is impressive, and a sci-fi game this ambitious could be a turning point for single-player campaigns. On the other, we've spent far too many years watching spectacular trailers without ever getting a finished product in our hands. Visual spectacle is no longer Squadron 42's problem; the problem is trust.
For competitive players, the direct impact is limited: this is a single-player experience, not a new title for the scene. For content creators, though, it's a different story. A release of this caliber, backed by such a passionate community, can generate a huge amount of conversation: trailer breakdowns, plot theories, PC performance, comparisons with Star Citizen. Our advice is simple: get ready, but don't bet your content schedule on a date that doesn't exist yet.
And one criticism we can't keep to ourselves: after more than a decade, the communication should be clearer. A quarterly window is fine, but players who have been waiting for years deserve a firm commitment. If CIG delivers, it will be one of the industry's great redemption stories. If it misses again, not even the best trailer in the world will save its credibility.
What Do You Think?
Squadron 42 is closer than ever, at least on paper, but all that built-up distrust weighs heavily. Some of us on the team already have it wishlisted, while others won't believe it until it's installed. Do you think Cloud Imperium Games will hit Q2 2027 this time, or will you be left waiting once again? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
