CD Projekt has delivered sooner than many expected. As reported by Vida Extra, patch 5.01 for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is now available to download on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, just a few days after the studio announced an update with major improvements. Much of the community wasn't counting on seeing it this week, so its arrival caught more than a few players by surprise. The Switch 2 version, however, is left out for now and will have to wait its turn.

Why does it matter? Because this is no mere cosmetic touch-up. The bulk of the patch targets performance and visuals, exactly where the game had been drawing the most complaints, especially on PS5. On top of that, a studio still polishing a title this many years after launch sends a clear message to the whole industry: long-term support still makes sense, and players appreciate it.

What you need to know

  • Patch 5.01 is already available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S; Switch 2 will get it later, with no specific date for now.
  • The most significant improvements focus on performance and graphics, with separate changelogs for PC and consoles.
  • PS5 benefits the most, since it had more issues than Xbox.
  • On the gameplay side, fixes include ladder bugs, unwanted delays when dodging and an error when applying oils to swords, among others.
  • The interface (HUD) gets minor tweaks.

What changes and who it affects

Let's start with what you'll notice with the controller in your hands. The juiciest fix is the one for dodging: any unintended delay in a combat system that lives and dies by timing means taking hits you didn't deserve. Add to that the ladder interactions, one of those details that break the flow when they fail, and the issue with sword oils, a key mechanic for preparing for fights against each type of monster. The official patch notes list more fixes, and the HUD also gets a few minor touch-ups.

But the really important stuff is on the technical side. CD Projekt has published two lists of improvements: one for PC and another for consoles. The latter clearly focuses on PS5, and it's not favoritism toward Sony but sheer necessity: it was the version with the most problems left to solve. If you play on Sony's console and have been struggling with the experience, this is the patch you've been waiting for. Xbox Series X/S gets changes too, though with less to fix.

What about Switch 2?

Players on Nintendo's console will have to be patient. The update will arrive later, but there's no specific date yet. It remains to be seen whether the delay is due to hardware-specific optimization or simply certification times.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: any patch that improves character responsiveness is welcome. The Witcher 3 may not be a competitive game, but anyone who plays on the highest difficulties, does speedruns or simply demands precision in every fight knows that an input that doesn't register in time is pure frustration. Fixing dodging is no minor detail: it gives players back the control they deserve.

It's also good news for content creators. A game that runs consistently on PS5 means cleaner captures, stutter-free streams and less time wasted explaining to chat why the picture keeps skipping. That said, we're not going to applaud without reservations: the fact that the PS5 version needed so many fixes says a lot about the state it was in when it reached players. And leaving Switch 2 for later, with no date, once again puts part of the community in the back row.

One last note: Vida Extra's headline talks about little gifts, but until we know the full details we'd rather not overhype anything. What we can confirm is that the patch exists, that it's already available and that it tackles the right problems. That's the standard we should always demand, not just when the community speaks up.
