Arc Raiders is back in the spotlight in a big way. According to GameSpot, the arrival of Frozen Trail, the major update Embark had spent months preparing, has sent the extraction shooter back up Steam's charts, both in sales and in concurrent players. The game has once again topped 100,000 players online at the same time, a figure it hadn't hit since May. On top of that, the new cosmetic pack has made its way into the platform's best sellers.
This matters because it's the first real test of a risky bet. In May, Embark announced it would stop dropping big content frequently and move to a half-yearly cadence, with two major updates per year. For months, many wondered whether a live-service game could hold on that long without any substantial new content. The early answer seems clear: when content arrives and it has substance, the community shows up.
What you need to know
- Frozen Trail is Arc Raiders' first major update since Embark adopted its half-yearly schedule.
- The game sits at number 5 among Steam's best sellers, behind only recent releases such as Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Gears of War: E-Day.
- The cosmetic DLC Frozen Trail Collector's Set is at number 8 in sales.
- It peaked at 106,000 concurrent players, placing it at number 12 among Steam's most played games.
- It's the first time since May that it has broken the 100,000 concurrent player barrier, and the number was still climbing while GameSpot was writing its report.
The comeback in numbers
The most striking detail isn't just the player count, but who Arc Raiders is up against on the sales charts. This week coincides with two heavyweight launches, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Gears of War: E-Day, which came out a few days earlier. An established game staying that close to two new releases with that kind of backing says a lot about its ability to win players back. GameSpot even suggests it could overtake them before the week is out, although for now that's just a possibility.
| Steam chart | Product | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Best sellers | Arc Raiders | 5 |
| Best sellers | Frozen Trail Collector's Set (DLC) | 8 |
| Most played (concurrent) | Arc Raiders (106,000 players) | 12 |
Embark's half-yearly bet
To understand the surge, you have to go back to May. That month, Embark explained that it needed more time to deliver the kind of update it had in mind and that, from then on, major content drops would arrive twice a year. It's no coincidence that May is also the last month in which Arc Raiders had topped 100,000 concurrent players: the dip lines up with that waiting period.
The model goes against the usual trend in live-service games, which tend to rely on short seasons and a steady trickle of content to keep people hooked. Embark chose the opposite: fewer updates, but bigger ones. The risk was obvious, because every month without new content is a month in which your players might try something else and never come back. For now, Frozen Trail suggests that many of them were simply waiting for a good reason to return.

Our take
Here in the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we see this comeback with optimism, but also with caution. A spike on the day an update launches is to be expected: the real challenge is how much of that audience is still around a month from now. If Arc Raiders deflates again within a few weeks, the half-yearly cadence will have a serious problem, because six months is an eternity in a genre where the competition never rests.
For those who play seriously, the half-yearly schedule has an often-overlooked advantage: the meta stabilizes. With fewer constant changes, there's more time to master maps, extraction routes and loadouts, and to build team strategies without a patch breaking everything every two weeks. The downside is that the stretches of fatigue also last longer, and that affects the player base you'll run into in every match.
For content creators, the message is clear: these weeks are gold. A game returning to the top of Steam means more searches, more curious newcomers and more returning players looking to catch up. Guides to the new update, breakdowns of the cosmetic pack or commentated matches now have more reach than they've had in months. That said, it's wise not to put all your eggs in one basket: with a cadence like this, there will be lean months, and you need a plan to cover them.
What do you think?
Did you jump back into Arc Raiders with Frozen Trail, or are you still watching from the sidelines? We'd love to know whether the half-yearly cadence works for you or whether you prefer games that update every few weeks. Do you think Embark made the right call by waiting longer to land a bigger hit, or will the slump of these past months come back to bite it?
