GTA 6 takes the radio out of the car: headphones, podcasts and six stations in Leonida

For more than two decades, Grand Theft Auto has followed the same ritual: you step out of the car and the music cuts out instantly. That ends with GTA 6. As reported by Gamereactor España, citing a Eurogamer report, Rockstar has announced that Jason and Lucia will be able to connect headphones to their smartphones to keep listening to the radio and podcasts while exploring Leonida on foot. It's the first time the series has allowed anything like this.

It might seem like a minor detail next to the sheer scale of a release like this, but it isn't. Radio has always been one of the series' signature features: it sets the tone of each city, turns songs into memes and creates moments the community remembers for years. Taking it out of the vehicle changes the way you experience the open world, and it comes with a seriously strong lineup of stations and artists.

What you need to know

  • On-foot audio for the first time: Jason and Lucia will use headphones connected to their smartphones, so the music no longer cuts out when you get out of the car.
  • Six confirmed stations covering Latin music, country, African music, metal, pop, and rap and hip-hop.
  • Big names: the hosts and artists include Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey, Morgan Wallen, Burna Boy, Kerry King, Tom Araya, Robyn and Trina, among others.
  • On-demand podcasts for both protagonists, separate from Leonida's terrestrial radio.
  • Leaving a vehicle no longer means losing access to the radio or podcasts.

The stations of Leonida

Rockstar has revealed six stations, each with a very distinct identity. Here's the list confirmed so far:

StationGenre
Cocoteo FMLatin music
Back Country RadioCountry
AfroBank FMAfrican music
The Chamber 106.6Metal
Flash FMPop
Dirty South ClassicsRap and hip-hop

The list of featured hosts and artists is also a talking point: Bad Bunny and RaiNao, Lana Del Rey and Morgan Wallen, Burna Boy and DJ Palms Trax, Kerry King and Tom Araya, Robyn and Alex Consani, and Trina and Trick Daddy. For a Spanish-speaking community like ours, seeing a station dedicated to Latin music with a name like Bad Bunny on the lineup is no small thing: it's a sign that Rockstar understands where the audience of a game set in a version of Florida is looking.

How it changes the way you play

The key change isn't just technical, it's about pacing. Until now, the on-foot sections (exploring, infiltrating, strolling through a shopping district) had their own ambient soundtrack, and the radio was reserved for driving. With headphones, the player decides what's playing at any given moment, and that opens the door to longer sessions without that awkward silence that forced you to find a car just to have some music.

On-demand podcasts add another layer. Since they're separate from terrestrial radio, they work more like content you choose than a live broadcast, which fits how we consume audio in real life today. Rockstar has always used radio to satirize American culture, and this format gives it even more room to do so.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're convinced: this is one of those improvements that, once you try it, you can't believe didn't exist before. Having music follow you on foot makes the world feel more coherent and more your own. For anyone planning to sink hours into Leonida, this matters more day to day than plenty of flashy announcements.

That said, content creators should be raising an eyebrow. A lineup of artists this well known is an audience magnet, but it also tends to be a copyright minefield on Twitch and YouTube. If the radio is going to play for longer and in more situations, the chances of a stream or video running into music issues go up too. According to the source, Rockstar hasn't shared any details on this, and it's something we'd like to see clarified as soon as possible, ideally with a clear option for streamers.

And one request from the competitive side: make all of this fully customizable. In tense modes, ambient audio and footsteps provide valuable information, and nobody wants a metal track drowning out what's happening around them. If Rockstar offers fine-grained control over volume and mixing, it'll be a complete win.
