GTA 6 Will Have Uber-Style Fast Travel: Rockstar Puts Its Own Spin on a Classic

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will have fast travel, just not the way we know it. Instead of the classic teleport menu, the game will include a ride-hailing app that feels a lot like Uber: you open it, request a car, and reach your destination without touching the wheel. As reported by Vandal, based on what the studio told Game Informer, this feature will let you move quickly between areas you've already discovered, and the headline even suggests you'll be able to chat with other passengers during the ride.
This is no small detail. GTA 6 launches on November 19 with the biggest map Rockstar has ever built: Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's world. At that scale, crossing the map from end to end on every mission could go from a pleasant drive to a waste of time. How Rockstar balances immersion and convenience will set the pace for hundreds of hours of play, whether you're playing for fun, competing, or creating content.

What You Need to Know
- GTA 6 will include an Uber-style ride app for automatic travel between areas you've already discovered.
- Leonida is twice as big as GTA 5's map and the largest in Rockstar's history.
- The in-game map will mimic satellite imagery, but will only show areas you've already explored in detail.
- Stealing cars is changing: older models can be stolen the old-fashioned way, but others require specialized tools.
- High-end sports cars will feature advanced security and tracking systems, so they won't be easy to get.
A Huge Map That Forces a Rethink of Getting Around
The big visual change is the map itself. Rockstar has gone with a look that mimics a satellite view, with enough detail to show what every corner of Leonida has to offer. There is a catch, though: you'll only see the areas you've already visited clearly. It's an elegant way to reward exploration and, at the same time, to give fast travel a purpose, since it's limited to known locations.
Rockstar doesn't want you to ditch your car entirely, either. Driving is still the way to enjoy the radio and its catalog of licensed music, one of the series' trademarks. The ride app doesn't replace that experience; it complements it for those moments when you just want to get there and get on with your business.
Stealing Cars Won't Be So Easy Anymore
The other major change affects one of the franchise's pillars. How you take a vehicle will depend on the model: older cars can be stolen the usual way, but others will require specific tools. And if you're after the best sports cars in the city, be ready: they come with security and tracking systems that make the job much harder. The days of standing in the middle of the street and driving off in the most expensive supercar in ten seconds are over.
Our Take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we like the idea. Building fast travel into the game's fiction, with an app that fits perfectly with the satire of modern life GTA has always delivered, makes far more sense than a cold menu. And if sharing rides with other passengers translates into conversations with real personality, it could become a goldmine of viral moments. For content creators, every ride could be a clip.
That said, we do have our doubts. For competitive players, and especially for the speedrunning community, fast travel is a key tool, and limiting it to explored areas completely changes optimal routes. On top of that, making sports cars harder to steal is a smart narrative choice, but if it carries over to an online mode, it could widen the gap between players who put in lots of hours and those who just jump in casually. Rockstar has a history of turning friction into an incentive to spend, and we'll be keeping a close eye on that.
Bottom line: a good idea that fits the series' tone well, but its real quality will depend on details we don't know yet, such as the cost of the service, wait times, or whether it will work the same way online. Until we get our hands on it, we're staying cautious.
