Sony launches a black PS5 for $350... but only in Japan

Sony has made another move with its flagship console, and this time it comes in the form of a completely black PlayStation 5 edition priced at $350. The company announced it on its official blog, as reported by IGN España. The catch is the usual one: this version will be exclusive to the Japanese market, so, at least for now, those of us playing in the Americas or Europe are left looking in from the outside.
Why does it matter so much? Because it arrives at a sensitive time. After several price hikes, the digital PS5 now costs €600 in Europe, a figure that just a few years ago would have sounded like a joke for a console midway through its generation. Seeing Sony offer a much cheaper model in another territory reopens a debate many players have been raising for a while: how much of what we pay is actual cost, and how much is market strategy?

What you need to know

- The announcement was made on the official PlayStation blog.
- In Europe, after several price increases, the digital PS5 now costs €600.

A price that stings outside Japan
Treating regions differently is nothing new in the industry, but it has rarely been this obvious. Japan is PlayStation's home market and, at the same time, one where the console has historically struggled more to grow against other platforms, especially handhelds. A more affordable edition there makes commercial sense: Sony needs to revive its presence at home, and price is the most direct lever.
That said, it looks very different from the outside. For European players, who have watched their console get more expensive time and time again, the message is an uncomfortable one: there is room to sell it for less, but that room isn't applied equally to everyone. And while exchange rates, taxes and distribution costs explain part of the differences between markets, it's hard to justify such a visible gap to the public without a clear explanation from the brand.
Will it reach other markets?
The source leaves the door slightly open with a "for now", but there has been no announcement about a possible expansion to other regions. It's worth being cautious: there are no confirmed dates or plans outside Japan, so any speculation about it arriving in the Americas or Europe is, for the time being, just that: speculation. Importing one isn't a magic fix either: shipping, customs and possible regional differences can eat up a good chunk of the savings.
Our take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: the announcement is good news for Japan and a bitter reminder for everyone else. Throughout this generation, the entry price for PlayStation has moved in the opposite direction to what's usual. Consoles normally get cheaper over the years; here the opposite has happened, and that hits hard for anyone who wants to start competing or creating content without spending half a paycheck to do it.
For the competitive scene, the price of hardware is no minor detail. Every extra euro spent on the console is one less euro for a good monitor, a decent headset, a stable connection or a capture card for streaming. If we want bigger, more diverse communities in PlayStation's competitive titles, getting in needs to be accessible. A more reasonably priced console in every market would help more players jump on board, and that benefits everyone: more opponents, more tournaments, more viewers.
That said, we also have to be fair: Sony has no obligation to apply the same policy everywhere, and Japan has its own circumstances. What we do ask for is transparency. If there's room to adjust prices, explain why it isn't being done in other territories. To content creators, our advice is not to rush into importing blindly: wait and see whether the offer expands to other markets before making any decisions.
What do you think?
We'd love to hear how it looks from where you are, whether that's in the Americas or Europe.
